Highlight

The Cayman Islands Carnival, also known as "Batabano," is an annual celebration deeply rooted in the local culture. This colorful and lively event typically takes place in late April or early May, attracting both locals and visitors. The festival spans several days filled with vibrant parades, energetic music, dance performances, and elaborate costumes that reflect the rich heritage of the islands.

History of Grand Cayman Carnival

The history of Batabano dates back to the late 1980s when a group of locals aimed to create a festival that would celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the Cayman Islands. The term "Batabano" is derived from the tracks left by the turtles as they crawl onto the beach to nest—a significant event in Caymanian culture.

The festival was initially a small event but gradually evolved into a grand celebration, embracing various cultural influences from African, Caribbean, and European traditions. It became an occasion for locals to showcase their artistic talents, including vibrant costume designs, pulsating music, and captivating dance performances.
