9 Things No One Tells You About Nipple Piercings

Nipple piercings are very popular amongst women and men. For some, it’s a way for them to express their sexuality or enhance their sexual experience. For others, it’s an act of rebellion because they know that their nipples will be visible through their shirt. And then for some, it’s simply for aesthetic purposes; they like the way it looks!

If you’re thinking about getting your nipples pierced, it’s always a good idea to do some research so that you’re as well-informed as possible about what you’re getting into. In fact, it’s a good idea to do thorough research for any body modification.

There certainly are pros and cons to getting your nipples pierced, and they will vary from person to person. What one person doesn’t mind about nipple piercings might be something that another person hates. For example, the fact that you have to take your shirt off at the piercing shop might bother some people! Which is totally understandable. However, some people don’t find it that big of a deal so this wouldn’t necessarily be a “con” to them.

Either way, getting as much background information as you can into what it’s like to get your nipples pierced will be super helpful and possibly put your mind at ease. Here are the things that no one tells you about nipple piercings that you should really know.

Are nipple piercings permanent?

When you get a nipple piercing, a barbell is used that screws off on one end. To remove a nipple piercing, all you have to do is unscrew the barbell and slide it out! You may choose to replace the jewelry with something else, but if you just want to remove them, it’s really easy to do yourself.

In most cases, if you wanted to know if your nipple piercing will close up if you took it out, the holes can close up pretty quickly so if you want to keep your nipple piercings, have fresh jewelry at the ready to replace your old ones. However, if you’re done with them, just remove the jewelry and don’t replace it with anything.

On some people, small scars may be visible after the holes close up. Usually, though, the scares are so small that they’re hardly noticeable. Of course, everyone’s body is different!

How long it takes for nipple piercing to heal? it depends, the most piercer will say about six to one year and this is totally true. I started to see real healing around the six months after I got the jewelry switch out.

Do nipple piercings bleed?

It’s totally normal and pretty common for your nipple piercings to bleed at first. However, it doesn’t happen to everyone! They shouldn’t bleed for more than a couple of days and the bleeding is usually quite minimal – you don’t have to worry about it getting on your clothing. However, if you’re noting some blood, make sure you rinse it away with warm water, so it doesn’t harden on your piercing.

Do nipple piercings hurt really bad?

This question will be answered differently depending on who you ask. Some people say that their nipple piercings didn’t hurt at all, others say it was incredibly painful. The nipple is already a sensitive area, so be prepared for some type of discomfort.

Before the nipple is actually pierced, the piercer will use a clamp to hold the nipple in place and make sure the jewelry goes where it’s supposed to. This will hurt a little as if someone is pinching your nipples really hard.

Next comes the needle. Piercing professionals are really quick with this move and make sure that the pain you feel when getting your nipples pierced is over almost instantly. My piecing took about “three OMFG!!!!” for it to be over.  You will have some heightened sensitivity in the first few weeks while your nipple piercings heal. before I got my piercing I actually did not realize how much I brush up against my nipples- for the first few days, this might become very apparent as every little thing that passes your nipples will remind you that you just had the pierced.

The only thing that kept them nice and in place wearing a wearing sports bra or a tight shirt to keep them protected. Invest in some high impact sports bra if you don’t already. These were my best friends for two months.

Do nipple piercings affect sensitivity?

For me personally, I can test to the fact that my nipples became a little bit more sensitive but not so much more, so It really depends on the person. For some people, nipple piercings don’t change the sensitivity of their nipples at all! Others report much more sensitivity after they’ve had them pierced. Very rarely do nipple piercings decrease the sensitivity in your nipples that would only come from damage to the nervous system.

What kind of nipple piercing jewelry should I get?

My personal suggestion starts your piercing with a piece of barbell jewelry. when I went to go get my nipples pierced my piercer didn’t have a long enough barbell so she used a hoop ring (they were the biggest ones she had that could give my nipple the space to expand because of the piercing). This makes my recovery soo much longer and harder. I had to get them switched out as soon as I was able to because it was not allowing my nipples to heal like it was supposed to.

There are many different styles and materials that you can choose from when it comes to nipple piercing jewelry. The most popular style, however, are the barbells – just like the ones that you will get pierced with initially. Barbells are the most popular style of nipple jewelry because they don’t move around as much as, say, hoops do. Also, it’s a lot easier to get a hoop or embellished jewelry caught on something accidentally! Trust me, your loofah will not be your friend! This can have a serious impact on the healing rate of your piercing – not to mention it hurts… a lot.

If you choose to replace your nipple jewelry, you should pay close attention to what the jewelry is made out of. Titanium or implant-grade stainless steel are the best metals because they are hypoallergenic and not too expensive.

If you’re going to be purchasing your own barbells, making sure you get something that is internally threaded rather than externally threaded. This means that the little ball on the end of the barbell screws into the bar – not the other way around. Externally threaded barbells create small cuts within the piercing which really hurts and can prevent you from healing properly.

Also a little bit more TMI, if you’re a woman who have boobs and also suffer from period boobs like I do, sizing up will be your friend. I normally experience boobs swelling before my mensural cycle hence, my nipples will increase a bit in size, buying a nipple ring that was a tab bit larger than my nipples helped my nipples to swell during my cycle and not hurt because the nipple ring had extra space.

How do I care for my nipple piercing?

New nipple piercings should be washed every day while you’re in the shower. Your best bet is going to be a very mild soap – many piercers recommend unscented Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap (the stuff made for babies) because it doesn’t have any unnatural ingredients.

Gently wash your new nipple piercings and make sure you get rid of any crustiness that has formed on the jewelry. When you get out of the shower, be very careful not to catch them on your towel! It’s recommended to just let them air dry. It’s also recommended to do a saline soak to speed up the healing process and keep your nipples clean in between showers. You can make a DIY saline solution with warm water and a little bit of sea salt (about half a teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of water) and pour the solution into shot glasses. Carefully tip the shot glasses onto your nipples and let them soak for a few minutes. Air dry afterward! This method really made all the difference for me, It really helped my nippled to heal better and stay clean.

It’s really, really, important to just leave your piercings alone, other than cleaning them, of course. Don’t touch them or twirl the barbells at all. Ladies, wear a soft, breathable bra like a comfy sports bra or bralette and really just forget about them for about a month.

You should really wait about a month before you let anyone else touch your nipples, too. Sorry, that means no fooling around just yet! It will be tempting to play with pierced nipples because many people find them really attractive, but it will just lead to pain, swelling, and a prolonged healing process.

What are common nipple piercing infections, symptoms, and treatments?

There is an infection called nipple thrush that is possible to contract from getting your nipples pierced however, it’s not very common. Nipple thrush is caused by yeast and is usually the result of an imbalance in the body. If you’re not very prone to yeast infections, it’s very unlikely that you will get a nipple thrush.

Otherwise, common nipple piercing issues are swollen and painful nipples, burning, or itching. You might also experience shiny, flaky, or blistering nipples. If any of these things happen, skip calling the piercer and go right to your doctor!

It’s also not uncommon for nipples to swell so much that the barbell is uncomfortable. If this happens, you should call your piercer and they can swap out the barbell for one that is longer and allows your nipples more room to swell and heal.

Should I do a nipple piercing myself at home?

You should really never perform any piercing at home unless you are a professional. Professional piercers understand how to create a sterile environment and have the right equipment to perform the piercing perfectly. If you go ahead and do it yourself with stuff you’ve bought online, you really don’t know if you’re using the proper material, technique, and safety measures.

Can I breastfeed after I get my nipples pierced?

This is a really common question. In most cases, nipple piercings don’t affect a mother’s ability to breastfeed at all! However, there is always the possibility of scarring or other complications that might affect the flow of breastmilk, so it really depends on the person. As long as the procedure is done properly, you take the aftercare process seriously, and you don’t have any allergic reactions to the metal that is used, you should be fine!

 Summing it up

Nipple piercings are lots of fun and can last forever, as long as you care for them properly. They can be like a little secret that only you know about until you take off your shirt in front of someone. Everyone loves a little surprise, right? I personally got mine done because I genially love the way it looks. throughout the long healing and mishaps with using the wrong jewelry, I would totally get it again

Now that you know the things that people don’t tell you about nipple piercings, you can confidently go and get your own done! All you have to do now is find a reputable shop to get pierced at, make an appointment, and proudly walk out of there with your new nipple piercings. Have fun! Let me know how my “OMFG” it took till the pain was over, lol.
